Their First Army ranks of foot soldiers have thinned considerably after years of ongoing conflict, and their Second Army, made up of Grisha, or gifted people who wield Small Science to manipulate nature at a molecular level (think of it like magic), is being made obsolete by advances in weaponry. Inspired by tsarist Russia of the early 1800s and ruled by monarchy in its capital Os Alta, Ravka is at a tipping point at the start of Shadow and Bone.
The bulk of the action takes place in Ravka, a country at war with its neighbors to the north (Fjerda) and south (Shu Han). But whatever you do: Read King of Scars after Ruin and Rising, unless you're okay with spoilers.
By design, the Grishaverse has many entry points, and each story offers something different - from the Chosen One conflict and YA romance of Shadow and Bone to the high-speed heists of Six of Crows. You could read the books in this order, but it's not exactly necessary.
